Description |
Millington mill and two steam schooners William A. Lansing, The Mills That Built Coos Bay, Oregon: And the Men Who Made it Happen, 2020, p. 242. Photo caption: Two steamers loading lumber at the Oregon Export Lumber Company mill at Millington. Since the Isthmus Slough channel does not have any inflow from a major river, once the channel was dredged by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers to a depth of 20 to 25 feet, little if any additional channel maintenance was needed. However, in 1921, the schooner Sir Thomas Lipton was towed to the mill, stern-first, by the tug Fearless, because there was not enough room in the Isthmus Slough Inlet for the vessel to turn around. Photo caption on page 265: Two lumber schooners loading wood at the Western White Cedar Company sawmill on the west side of Isthmus Slough. The channel depth at this location on the slough was 25 to 30 feet. |
